Not sure where to begin with Balcony Solar?  You may have heard that Colorado recently passed a law allowing residential utility customers to supplement their energy usage with balcony solar.

What Is Balcony Solar?

Balcony solar is a small-scale solar power system designed for renters, apartment dwellers, condo owners, and homeowners who want an affordable way to reduce electric bills without installing a full rooftop system.

These systems usually include:

  • 1–4 solar panels
  • A microinverter
  • Mounting hardware
  • A standard AC plug or dedicated circuit connection

The system converts sunlight into usable AC electricity that helps power appliances in your home during the day.


Why is Balcony Solar Becoming so Popular?

Balcony solar has already exploded in popularity in parts of Europe because:

  • It is lower cost than full rooftop solar
  • Many systems are DIY-friendly
  • It works well for renters
  • Installation is much faster
  • People can start small and expand later

Now interest is rapidly growing in the United States, especially in states beginning to clarify regulations around plug-in solar like Colorado.  As of June 2026, Utah, Maine, Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, and Vermont have signed a plug-in solar bill into law.

Not all plug-in solar systems sold online are approved for use in the United States.

Before installing any system:

  • Verify equipment is UL listed
  • Follow local electrical codes
  • Check utility requirements
  • Never overload circuits
  • Never use damaged extension cords

How Balcony Solar Works

Here’s the simple version:

Step 1 — Solar Panels Produce DC Power

Solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity when sunlight hits them.

Step 2 — Microinverter Converts Power

A microinverter changes DC power into household AC power.

Step 3 — Your Home Uses the Power First

Your appliances consume the solar energy before pulling power from the utility grid.

This means:

  • Your refrigerator
  • Wi-Fi router
  • TV
  • Computers
  • Fans
  • Chargers

…can partially run on solar during daylight hours.


Understanding Grid-Tied Plug-In Solar

A balcony solar system is designed for “grid-tie.”  Whenever we have solar that is “grid-tied,” and the grid goes down, the unit will not operate.  Due to safety for the linemen who would need to repair the lines, the entire “grid” is shut down.

That means:

  • The inverter synchronizes with utility power
  • Solar energy offsets household consumption
  • The utility still provides backup power when needed

If the utility power goes out:

  • Most microinverters automatically shut down for safety

This is called Anti-Islanding Protection.  Utility workers should not encounter unexpected live power lines during outages.


Will My Electric Meter Spin Backwards?

More than likely - NO! The utility is only going to allow you to ‘offset’ your current usage, they will not allow you to build up ‘energy credit’ like a traditional system would.

This depends on:

  • Your utility
  • Your state
  • Meter type
  • Local interconnection rules

Some utilities:

  • Allow export
  • Require applications
  • Require agreements
  • Limit system size

Others may prohibit plug-in export systems entirely.

Always check with your utility provider before connecting a system.


How Much Power Can Balcony Solar Produce?

Production can vary greatly and depends on:

  • Sunlight hours
  • Panel angle
  • Shading
  • Weather
  • Orientation

Production Math Example:

A 400W balcony system might generate approximately:

400W \times 5 full sun hours = 2000Wh \approx 2kWh

That could offset:

  • Internet equipment
  • Laptop charging
  • Lighting
  • Small appliances
  • Part of daytime household usage

This is NOT enough for energy to run central air conditioning, the dryer or your oven.  


Best Locations for Balcony Solar Placement

Take into consideration what kind of real estate (as in balcony, or yard space) that you can place your panels facing as south as possible.  For ideal panel placement, consider:

  • South-facing
  • Minimal shading
  • Strong mounting surface
  • Good airflow behind panels

East and west facing orientations can still work well.  North-facing panels in the Northern Hemisphere usually perform poorly.

Trees are beautiful, but they are also solar panel assassins.


Beginner Mistakes to Avoid


Mistake #1 — Buying Cheap Unknown Inverters

Some online solar equipment can lack proper certifications, especially when manufactured outside of the US.

Cheap equipment can:

  • Fail early
  • Cause utility issues
  • Create fire hazards

Don’t cheap out on the microinverter!

Have a bad solar panel? You just lose production.  Have a bad inverter? This could be a safety issue.

Amazon is fine for:

  • MC4 cables
  • mounting hardware
  • wire management
  • Tools
  • monitoring devices

But for the microinverter?  Buy from an actual solar distributor with real support and verified UL certification.

The reality is a lot of the no-name Amazon microinverters are sketchy on:

  • UL certification
  • anti-islanding protection
  • warranty support
  • overheating
  • long-term reliability

You can research for yourself on the Reddit DIYers that are already talking about cheap microinverters dying fast or creating safety concerns.

Your future self will thank you.


Mistake #2 — Ignoring Wind Loads

Panels act like sails during storms.


Improper mounting can:

  • Damage property
  • Injure people
  • Destroy equipment


Mistake #3 — Using Indoor Extension Cords

Outdoor solar systems require outdoor-rated components.

Always use:

  • UV-resistant wiring
  • Weather-rated connections


Mistake #4 — Expecting Off-Grid Backup Power

Most balcony solar systems shut down during outages unless paired with batteries and specialized equipment.


Grid-tied does NOT mean backup power.


Can Balcony Solar Use Batteries?

Colorado State Legal Protections

Limits: You can install UL-listed plug-in systems that generate up to 1,920 W (the highest state limit in the US).

No Approval Needed: Colorado Springs Utilities and property managers cannot unreasonably prohibit or require prior approval for portable, safe, plug-in setups.

https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb26-1007: The act clarifies that a portable-scale solar generation device is considered an energy efficiency measure on and after January 1, 2027, and a unit owners' association of a common interest community is therefore not permitted to prohibit the installation or use of a portable-scale solar generation device.

1. Solar Panels

These are the meat of the system, collecting sunlight and generating electricity.

Recommended beginner setup:

  • 100W–450W panels
  • rigid or lightweight/flexible depending on balcony setup

Larger panels produce more energy, but require stronger mounting, more space and heftier cabling.

Solar systems require proper connectors and weather-resistant wiring.  Do not mix random connectors from different manufacturers.  (That’s how expensive smoke gets created!)

Use:

  • Proper grounding
  • Correct connector types

These cables are essential for connecting the panels to the inverter safely.  You can buy cables with connectors already installed, or you can create them custom if you need a specific length.

3. MC4 Connectors

If you are looking to create a custom length cable, or need to repair a broken connector, these connectors are sold individually.

4. Adjustable Mounting Brackets

Panels must be securely mounted.  During the extreme weather conditions we can face, wind in particular, all equipment should be safely secured.  Wind loading matters more than beginners realize.  A “light breeze” to you can look like an airplane wing to a solar panel.

Common mounting locations:

  • Balcony railings
  • Patio structures
  • Ground racks
  • Fence mounts
  • Shed roofs

  • Grid compliant
  • Utility accepted
